'I Can't Let You Do This'

Libby stared off the edge of the cliff, eyeing the rocks far below her on the groun, jutting out at odd angles. A breeze gently wove itself around her, tugging her clothes forward, as if they were telling her to jump off of the cliff and end the life she had worked so hard to create.

Carter woke with a start. He sat up, his sleeping bag tossed carelessly to the side as he exited his tent silently, walking past the burning embers that were the campfire. A breeze caught his attention, causing him to look where it was headed. He saw a teenaged girl standing at the edge of the cliff, gazing down at the rocks below.

Carter walked with the wind as quietly as he could. Even when he stumbled on a rock and muttered "shit", Libby didn't look at him, or even ackadknowledge (sp?) that he was there. Carter stood beside her in his sleepwear, which consisted of gray pajama pants and a black ACDC shirt.

"Libby," he murmured, touching her on the arm. Libby, eyes half lidded with sorrow, told him "There's so much pain... there's just so much..." Carter felt his heart ache at what his girlfriend was telling him.

Libby's hot pink camisole that she slept in kept getting tugged by the wind as she looked at Carter, sorrow in her hazel eyes. Oh no... she's... Carter thought. He met Libby's eyes with his own chocolate-colored ones, and Libby shook her head as Carter gently ran his fingers up and down her arm, where scars should have been.

"I'm going to do it," Libby whispered. "I'm going to jump." Carter, who had been deep in thought, was immediatly drawn out of it. "No!" he cried. Libby shook her head. "I must," she replied.

Carter tried unsuccesfully to pull his girlfriend away from the edge of the cliff. "I can't let you do this!" he yelled. "I can't watch you kill yourself!"

Tears ran down Libby's cheeks as she told her boyfriend "Then don't watch. There's nothing you can do." Carter's throat choked up as he spun his girlfriend and kissed her passionatly on the lips, the heat of his lips mixing with hers. Libby looked at Carter, and they said together "I love you."

Libby, tears still streaming a path down her cheeks, turned away from Carter, and jumped off the cliff. She turned in the air, seeing her boyfriend shake uncontrollably as he watched his girlfriend plummet to her death.

Libby's body smashed into the rocks below, and Carter sat on a rock, contemplating the situation. Should he kill himself as well, so Libby wouldn't have to wait for him?

Carter looked down at her body, back at the tents, then back at Libby's body again as he took a deep breath, and jumped off the cliff, joining his love into eternity.

In the morning, when everyone had woken up, Lauren had gone for a walk to stretch her legs. She looked over the cliff at the beautiful view, then looked down. She screamed. "Lauren!" her friend Nahiyan yelled. "What happened? Are you okay?"

Lauren sobbed, pointing down at the bottom of the cliff, where there lay Libby and Carter, their bodies entwined in an ever-lasting embrace.
